Students riot on University campus
Still no election results seventeen days after the much needed March 29 2008 General Elections, more than 300 university of Zimbabwe students joined Zimbabwe in demanding their ultimatum right to vote on the 15th of April 2008. Addressed by ZINASU  President Clever Bere, students unanimously agreed to and urged all and sundry to bring the country to a halt until and unless the governance crisis is resolved. Students further closed down the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) university branch that was established to collect fees from students.


 Students Storm VC’s Office NUST
Following the expiry of the Zimbabwe National     Students Union Ultimatum on 20 February 2008,  students at the National university of Science and Technology (NUST) IN Bulawayo on the 4th of March 2008 staged a peaceful protest on campus. The    ultimatum was handed over to Robert Mugabe      demanding an urgent address to the concerns of the students, up to the expiry date the demands were not responded to.

Over 500 students took part in the peaceful protest which was however crushed by close to 40 baton wielding riot police. NUST Student Representative Council (SRC), Secretary General Sheunesu Nyoni and Information and Publicity Secretary Brian Mtisi were later picked up by police and later released.

Bindura University students take to the streets
There was mayhem in Bindura the 22nd of April 2008 when Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) students joined other students in a       countrywide protest against the illegal regime’s  efforts to cling to power despite losing the March 29 ‘harmonized’ General Elections.
The march was disrupted by ruthless and brutal armed soldiers assaulting students. This led to the arrest of three students who were hurriedly whisked away and later appeared in court being charged  under the notorious Public Order and Security Act.

Violence intensifies nationwide
Violence perpetrated by zanu pf has intensifies across the country after the release of the presidential    results where the Movement For Democratic Change leader, Morgan Tsvangirai won the elections.

 Violence has worsened in areas such as Chiweshe, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East as          supporters of MDC are being intimidated, maimed and killed by ZANU PF youth militia. MDC supporters are sleeping in mountains with no food and other basic needs.

Students protest on Chinhoyi University Campus
More than 600 students at Chinhoyi University of Technology staged a peaceful protest on campus on the 7th of May 2008 demanding the step down of the shameless Robert Mugabe who has brought misery to the citizenry of Zimbabwe.

Failed attempts by security officers to disrupt the peaceful protest impelled a vicious storm on campus by two truck loads of riot police. A black out followed but the discriminate assaults led to the arrest of Faith Mutepa, Priviledge Matizanadzo and three other    student council leaders.

Great Zimbabwe University students protest
Great Zimbabwe University students demonstrated on Monday 21 April 2008 against the continued illegal stay in office by military junta Robert Mugabe and the exorbitant tuition fees hike factored by the University. The peaceful protest prompted the security personnel on campus with the help of riot police officers to   violently thwart the peaceful demonstration. ZINASU Secretary for Legal Affairs Courage Ngwarai was   arrested and later released after appearing in court.
 
 
Free at last
Edison Hlatswayo released on ZW$5 million bail

The undeterred and mounting pressure from students on government saw a sudden short change from the court proceedings of 22 October 2007 that had further remanded Edison Hlatswayo in custody to 30 October 2007. Hlatswayo was released on ZW$5million bail on Wednesday 24 October 2007.

Edison Hlatswayo was however taken for a medical checkup and rehabilitation process in Harare and is subsequently supposed to appear twice every week at Masvingo Police station.

Student leader in remand prison for more than 30 days

Great Zimbabwe University students union secretary general Eddison Hlatswayo who was arrested and detained on the 27th of September 2007 by Masvingo police and state agents is languishing in Masvingo Remand Prison for more than 30days to date. Hlatswayo has repeatedly appeared in court eight times, latest today the 22nd of October 2007 where he was again remanded in prison to the 30th of October 2007.

Despite the frantic efforts by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Students Solidarity Trust in providing legal and humanitarian support respectively, Edison Hlatswayo was denied bail eight times and his health fast deteriorating without any medical attention.

Meanwhile...

Three students from Great Zimbabwe University who were arrested and detained at Masvingo police station on Thursday 18 October 2007 for showing disgruntlement over Hlatswayo's court outcomes, appeared in court on Saturday 20 October 2007 where they were remanded in prison custody to today the 22nd of October 2007 and after appearing were again further remanded to 25 October 2007. The remanded three are George Makamure, Orgylife Makova and a female student Brenda Mupfurutsa who has since been denied access to sanitary wear.


Zimbabwe National Students Union calls for support from all progressive unions in putting pressure on the Government and its Judiciary for an immediate and unconditional release of remanded students
