The University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Professor Levy Nyagura impulsively evicted all students from campus residence after disturbances that rocked the oldest institution of higher learning on the 3 rd of July and 7th of July 2007. Students are protesting against the unjustified ONE MILLION Zimbabwean dollars top up fees. The top up came as result of the extension of the semester by the university. The students are questioning the rationale behind the top up fees that arose from university administration’s incompetence after failing to end the semester as scheduled because of the lecturers who went on a three months long strike.
On the 3 rd of July more than 3000 students converged at New Complex 4 residence and before they could make resolutions armed police descended and started to indiscriminately assault students, in the melee, more than 15 students were injured and three arrested.
On the 7th of July heavily armed police with sophisticated artillery, teargas canisters, Israeli water canons and vicious dogs descended on the students as they were holding a peaceful review meeting. Six students were arrested, including Shaun Matsheza, the student union Vice President and Caeser Sitiya, Student Representative Assembly member who were later released on bail on the 9th of July 2007 from Harare Central Police Station. Several students were seriously injured and received medical attention at Avenues Clinic, Jotham Shumba sustained a broken limb and Caeser Sitiya developed an infection on his leg after a vicious dog bite.
The University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Levy Nyagura defied a High Court order that had sanctioned reinstatement of students back into their halls of residence. After the sudden, total and brutal mass evictions, students, with legal assistance from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), filed an urgent High Court application demanding immediate reinstatement into their halls of residence. The application was fortunately granted and signed before the Honourable Justice Hlatshwayo on Friday the 13th of July 2007 and students in jubilation for the victory against this inhuman Nyagura gathered their belongings for reinstatement into their residence on Monday the 16th of July 2007 as stated by the order.
Students were shocked but not surprised by the illusive actions by Nyagura, to defy a legitimate and standing High Court order. Nyagura agrees to the fact that he signed a High Court order but will however not open any halls of residence at the university, reasons being that he fears threats to life and damage to property, whose life? No one knows. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights have therefore demanded the arrest of Levy Nyagura for contempt of court. Students in turn have vowed to return into their halls of residence with defence from a legal and standing High Court order and irregardless of Nyagura's singled, baseless and illegimate statement. ZINASU President, Promise Mkwananzi has urged all students to return into their halls of residence as ordered by the High Court. |
